URBAN ART SHACK

Welcome!

What is the Urban Art Shack?

Begun in early 2023, The Urban Art Shack is a creative passion project by artist Michael Letzig. Focusing solely on the dynamic & rich urban landscape and the iconography that emerges out of it, Letzig creates arresting graphite drawings that are restrained & elegant while juxtaposed to vibrant, multimedia works which lean heavily into the restless abandon and "incidental & accidental" spontaneous city experience.

Water Towers, well established as a New York City icon, are a central theme in this project. Their rustic, rural appeal and their out-of-place endurance next to their concrete, steel neighbors capture the imagination of both rural and city dwellers, alike.

Letzig tends to zero in on a concept and run with it. He loves exploring the physical relationship with the tools & the medium and the possibilities with interpreting a concept and pushing it to it's outer limits.

In 2013 he began seriously looking at the towers. He would stop mid-stride on the sidewalk, pull out the sketchbook and begin working right there.

In 2023 he had the self confidence and discipline needed to explore and push this concept beyond academic drawing. He dove right into various media like painting, pastel, mixed media, collage and linocut.

An added benefit of putting the Urban Art Shack out there has been a genuine and generous community of art enthusiasts. The neighborhood residents & workers and the tourists & visitors stop by to exchange their stories & inspiration. And buy art.

Thank you so much for your time in reading this. Your time is precious and therefore, it is sincerely appreciated.

Onwards and Upwards,

Michael Letzig
